Getting Inspired to Use My Sewing Patterns Stash

Do you own a big stack of patterns and never actually get to use more than 5% of those? Yeah, me too.

I recently almost bought a pattern the second time because some genius sewist made a rad dress in an ever more fantastic fabric and changed just the length of the sleeve and nothing else. I had this pattern for years and I never thought of using the fabric she used or to pick the colour she picked.

I guess sometimes patterns that come with a photo sometimes keep me from imagining a different dress. I also tend to choose patterns because of the styling of the garment in the photo or the model’s pose or attitude.

Does that ever happen to you?

So I’m starting to search for what other people have made with the patterns I own.

Sabrina from Honor Roll made a super cute version of the 2305 Simplicity pattern. I’ve seen this pattern many times before and never noticed the sleeve detail. Love the peachy pink and the coral red combination also. So sweet.

I don’t know about you, but this cover of the Simplicity 4109 jacket pattern is just meh and I would have never thought an awesome jacket such as Dixie’s from Dixie DIY could come out of it. Love the fabric she chose and the fit.

This Burda blouse pattern shows what a difference fabric can make to a pattern. Make this in a thicker cotton and it looks boxy, but it you make it in a nice print batiste or silk, the blouse is awesome.

What about you? How do you get inspired to give a pattern a try?
