What would a sewist be without people who understand him or her? Who take fabric talk, dart fitting and pattern grading seriously. Who like to make things, ruin meters of fabric and pattern paper.
Those people who inspire you to do better, learn more things, explore your own ideas and passions?
Do you sew? You should read these blogs. Simple as that.
Rochelle is one of my favourite sewists. She´s beautiful, fun, energetic and she makes the most amazing fabric combinations I´ve seen lately. Just look at her versions of the Colette Patterns Macaron dress and her Hazel dress in 3 tones of mint. Apart from sewing inspiration and some tips, Lucky Lucille always comes with a dose of optimism and a big smile.

What’s the thing you love most about sewing?
Rochelle: I love sewing because it’s kind of a dying art. Everything is so mass produced nowadays that being able to sew is truly a special talent, not to mention it’s nice to have one-of-a-kind clothing. It makes me feel like an alchemist when I take fabric, which isn’t much on its own, and turn it in to something I can actually wear! I’m also proud to be able to carry on the line of sewing savvy women in my family.
Why do you blog?
Blogging as a means to document projects and personal events is a big part of how I ended up with a home on the internet, but a bigger part of it stemmed from all of the blogs I was following (before I had a blog of my own) and the friends those bloggers had made simply because they had similar interests and a place to share them. I’m a bit of an anti-social homebody, so it makes sense that it’s easier for me to meet people and make friends online. Last year I moved from New York to Vermont and didn’t know a single soul besides my boyfriend and my dog when I got there. I looked to blogging as a way to make new friends, and I’m happy to say I’ve made a lot!

I follow more sewing blogs than I can count, so trying to pick only two seems near impossible and a little unfair haha! There are so many talented and inspiring ladies out there that I love keeping up with, but the blogs that really stick out in my mind are the ones that add an element of humor to their posts. I love the bloggers who don’t take themselves too seriously. Lauren of LLadybird, and Winnie of Scruffy Badger Time are probably my two favorites in that respect. They’re equally hilarious as they are talented!
Mad Girls Prefer Pretty Dresses

I really like Nina’s blog because she is daring and bold. She has the looks and the style of a movie star and it’s always an inspiration to see what she makes.
What’s the thing you love most about sewing?
I know a lot of people say this about sewing, but it’s so true: you learn something with every project. There are so many ways to sew a garment, so many different variations, that there will always be something left to learn! And at the same time I never feel like I’m “not getting anywhere”, because with every new garment you can see that you’ve improved a skill. What I love specifically about the process of sewing a garment, is drafting or altering a pattern and the moment when I can put on my (usually half-finished garment) for the first time.

Why do you blog?
I like to do a bit of everything, and I think a blog is a good way to keep a record of the creative things I do. It also keeps me motivated, because I can share my ideas and plans and get feedback from people who also like to sew (since I don’t have any real life friends who sew). I just like the online sewing community (there’s so much information and encouragement), and having a blog allows me to be a part of it.

I think the one I visit most often is Gertie’s New Blog For Better Sewing, but another one I’ve started reading again recently is Zilredloh.
Wilma’s blog is not only about sewing and DIY projects, but also about what she likes and what she cooks. And she’s pretty amazing.

What’s the thing you love most about sewing?
I love to create new and original things. When I make something I know it will be unique. It’s a one of a kind item no body else has. I love to be
Why do you blog?
I want to share my ideas with other people. It gives me so much joy when I get nice comments or when I see variations on my projects.

Wow, just two? I love the projects on Sincerely Kinsey I also adore her pictures. The second blog I really like is Dana Made It It’s a lovely blog with a lot of sewing projects. A lot of these projects are for kids!
Nette is one of those people who give you energy. Even though I’ve never met her in person, just by reading her blog you feel what a talented (and very modest) sewist she is. Her style is sometimes classical, other times playful and her garments are impeccable.
What’s the thing you love most about sewing?
I just feel very happy using my hands and getting things done just the way I imagined them to be.
Why do you blog?
As much as I love learning from others and their experience through their blogs, I want to share my successes as well as mistakes. Blogging enables me to get in contact with like-minded people all over the world and learn about their thoughts on my sewing projects. I really appreciate this.

Laura can turn almost anything into a wow-garment. She cuts, she sews, she cuts again and voila: a new shirt that looks like it was taken straight from the season’s fashion week.
What’s the thing you love most about sewing?
I love the process of creating, whether it turns out beautiful or not…
Why do you blog?
Initially I was selling the same designs over and over. It got monotonous…so I wanted to mix things up. I have always been doing trash to couture, so I figured if I’m going to do projects I might as well post them to share.

I have always liked No Big Dill sewing projects… so detailed.
Jen is one of my all time favourite bloggers. I’ve wrote about her blog and I’ve interviewed her before, but it seems there’s never enough of Grainline in my life. She is a professional pattern maker (oh, the envy) with her own clothing line called Hound.
What’s the thing you love most about sewing?
This probably sounds obvious but the thing I like most about sewing is spending a few hours working on something and having a finished product at the end, usually clothes. It’s nice to make something that is exactly what you want and higher quality than I would be able to afford in the shops, plus then you get to wear it around (or use it if it’s a non-clothing item like a quilt) and take pride in the fact that you made this awesome thing. The thing I like least though is when you spend hours on a quilt and your pets slowly destroy it over the years…sigh.
Why do you blog?
I started out blogging because I was working as a pattern maker and doing various other odd jobs and wasn’t spending any time making anything for myself or anything that I wanted to make and it gave me motivation to get cracking on some projects and kept me inspired. If you look back at my first year or so on my blog, I hardly made any garments at all, but it kept me thinking about sewing, knitting and things I wanted to make. I also like “meeting” other bloggers, though admittedly I’m not a very good connector. I need to work on that but I’m super shy, it’s hard!

I sure can! Right now two of my favorites for garment sewing are Sallieoh and Makes the Things, I feel like we share a similar clean, modern garment style and both Sallie and Stephanie are crazy talented.
Mady has been blogging only for a few months, but I always find myself reading and enjoying her posts. From her photos of the week, to her latest projects and her style inspiration. I just love what she makes.
What’s the thing you love most about sewing?
The thing I love most about sewing is that for me it works kind of as a therapy. Every time I work on a project everything just slows down and I feel happy! And for me that is the case with my creativity! It has a huge impact to my mood and just relaxes me. I’m not gonna lie, there are also these frustrating moments when nothing goes as planned and I’m far far away from calmness or happiness. But the feeling you get when you finish a project and from a piece of fabric you have created something beautiful for me is priceless!
Why do you blog?
I blog because after a long time reading all these amazing blogs out there I decided I wanted to be a part of this world!I wanted a place to express my creativity and connect with people that share the same interests as me.I started blogging just recently but I think it was one of the best decision I’ve ever made!Since then I’ve discovered how truly big and amazing the sewing community is and I love everything about it!

Can you recommend 2 other sewing blogs you like?
That is a quite tricky question! I’ve always had a hard time picking just one or two favorite blogs! But if I had to pick just two of my favorite blogs to recommend I would have to go with the ones that really inspire me and are actually from the first blogs I started reading when I started sewing.
The first one is the ”A pair & a spare” blog. I really love Geneva’s style and I find every post very inspiring! Also with her tutorials you can create one of a kind garments with a quite simple way. The second one would have to be the ”Cotton and Curls” blog. Lizzie’s style is also one I love and her sewing tutorials are amazing! The awesome part is you don’t need a pattern for any of them. You just need measurements or maybe a garment you already own! These are just two of my favorite sewing blogs, but of course I could just go on and on recommending! There are just too many awesome blogs out there!
Maddie writes about sewing, pattern making and pattern manipulation. Her 9 to 6 job involves a lot of the things that many other bloggers, such as myself do in their spare time, such as sewing 🙂 Maddie shares her knowledge about pattern making and post about garments she makes.
What’s the thing you love most about sewing?
I don’t know if this is the thing I love MOST about sewing but I think it is an intriguing point about the world of sewing. Sewing is a solitary hobby – only the seamstress creates the pattern and constructs the garment. Yet the world of sewing is very collaborative. A community exists around the hobby that doesn’t for other hobbies. Seamstresses and pattern makers from around the world unite via letters and the Internet about everything stitching, sewing machines, and fabric.
Why do you blog?
I blog to share the knowledge that I have been so fortunate to learn with others who have not. When I was eighteen, I worked in a tailor shop with a women who literally grew up in factories and the garment district. When I was twenty-two, I worked in technical design/pattern making for 2 and a half years for Anthropologie. The knowledge that I learned during these two experiences isn’t taught in school – it’s only learned in trade. I feel extremely lucky that I landed both of these opportunities that I feel the need to pass my knowledge along – to pay it forward. That’s what life is about, right? Giving back?

Sallie Oh maybe it’s because she’s a former Philadelphian (where I live) or maybe because she’s an art school alum (so am I – Savannah College of Art and Design) but Sallie is truly a gem. After a couple of days without checking her blog, I will intuitively wonder what sewing or art related projects she has been up to.
I’ve been knee deep in sewing lingerie lately and so has Amy, the blogger behind Cloth Habit. It’s great to share and read about another seamstress who is going through the same sewing obstacles and I am.
What about you? What are your favourite sewing bloggers?
Always love to find new blogs! Some new ones to me here, looking forward to checking them out.
Totally agree, and I would love to know more about the blogs you read, Elaine! I’ve added your blog to my reader too!
Amazing list of bloggers you have in there! I follow a few sewing bloggers already but it is always nice to see and read “new” bloggers! I love to spend my free time looking at their recent creations and I instantly get inspired!
Me too, Kayla! Thanks for the comment!
